Slide Rocks State Park, Arizona

Slide Rocks State Park
Slide Rock State Park, located 7 miles north of Sedona was originally the Pendley Homestead - a 43 acre historical apple farm located in Oak Creek Canyon. The land was acquired by Frank L. Pendley under the Homestead Act n 1910. Pendley's farm succeeded where others had failed thanks to his pioneering irrigation system which is still in use in the park today. This unique irrigation system enabled Pendley to plant his first apple orchard in 1912 and thereby beginning a pattern of agricultural development that has dominated the site ever since.

Slide Rock State Park is not only an excellent example of early agricultural development in Central Arizona it was also instrumental in the development of tourism in the canyon. The completion of the canyon road in 1914 and subsequent paving in 1938 both enabled and encouraged recreational use of the canyon. Pendley took advantage of this by building rustic cabins to cater for holidaymakers and sightseers. Arizona State Parks purchased the homestead from the Arizona Parklands Foundation in 1985. The park was dedicated in 1987 and then accepted onto the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

The park is named after a stretch of slippery creek bottom - the Slide Rock, adjacent to the homestead. Visitors to the park can slide down a slick natural water chute or wade along the creek. Numerous Hollywood movies such as Broken Arrow starring James Stewart, Gun Fury starring Rock Hudson and Drum Beat starring Charles Bronson and Alan Ladd have also been filmed here.
